Arbitrum CollabTech Hackathon: Impact Report

The Arbitrum CollabTech Hackathon, powered by RnDAO, took place online over the month of October.  With over a hundred talented builders around the globe, 15 finalists, and ultimately 3 winners, this event highlighted solutions and talent across various domains of Collaboration Technology, all developed on Arbitrum.

Let’s take a closer look at how this hackathon came together, the hard work that made it possible, and what’s next for these projects.

Hackathon Highlights

  • 164 applications received
  • 143 participants accepted
  • 20 projects created
  • 15 eligible final submissions
  • 10 mentoring sessions with industry experts
  • Daily office hours hosted by RnDAO
  • 4 specialized workshops for enhancing technical skills, project pitching, and overall project development.

From developers and designers to product managers and founders, participants had access to a rich support system to help bring their ideas to life. The dedicated mentoring and daily office hours created an environment where participants could quickly get answers, share feedback, and refine their work for maximum impact.

Thank you to the mentors, partners, and Arbitrum DAO who participated over the past months to help make the first iteration of this event a success.

Objective & Goals

This month-long, online hackathon was designed to advance the development of a Collaboration Tech cluster in Arbitrum, attract developers and entrepreneurs, and educate them on the benefits of building on Arbitrum.

Most L2s compete in DeFi and Gaming, leading to an arms race to give more and more grants and incentives, frequent migration of projects, and poor differentiation. Meanwhile, CollaborationTech is a high-value area and ready for a deep transformation by migrating organizations on-chain and automating decisions, inventory management, access, etc, and protocolising CRMs, ERPs, and other foundational tools.

The Arbitrum CollabTech Hackathon set out to drive:

  • Community growth: Attract talented developers to build on Arbitrum One, Nova, and Orbit chains.
  • Growth in projects using Arbitrum infrastructure: promote innovative, high-transaction volume projects to be built on Arbitrum.

Market differentiation: Arbitrum can achieve high ROI in a less competed vertical, bring in talented interested in coordination (high potential of contributing to the DAO), and make way in a high-potential market expected to reach $1+ trillion by 2030.

KPI’s & Milestones

Planning (July-September):

  • Plan hackathon structure, rules, and prizes.
  • Recruit judges and mentors.
  • Develop marketing and outreach strategy.
  • Compile Arbitrum tech support documentation and coordinate with Offchain labs.
  • Execute marketing campaigns (social media, partnerships, online events, etc.).
  • Lead recruitment for participants
  • Discord setup for hackathon execution

Hackathon Execution (October):

  • Provide mentorship and office hours support to participants
  • Evaluate submissions based on criteria.
  • Announce winners and distribute prizes.

Mentors Who Guided the Way

The hackathon was enriched by experienced mentors, including:

Each mentor provided builders with critical guidance, leading a 1-hour session focused on their topic of expertise, whether it be scaling strategies, user acquisition, or Arbitrum governance challenges.

Judging Process: Community and Expert-Led

The hackathon’s judging process is designed to be transparent and community-driven, using JokeRace as the platform. Here’s how it works:

  1. Three expert judges vote on their favorite projects based on innovation, impact, and execution.
  2. The community acts as the fourth judge in a separate voting process, where everyone can join the contest on Jokerace to cast their vote.

Impact: Shaping the Future of Collaboration Technology

Feedback from participants highlighted several key areas where builders are making strides:

  • Enhanced Governance: Tools that facilitate more secure and efficient DAO management.
  • Knowledge Empowerment: Platforms that democratize access to scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Developer Synergy: Innovative solutions that foster better networking and collaboration among developers.
  • Community Engagement: Systems that build stronger, trust-based relationships between creators and their audiences.
  • Talent Connectivity: Marketplaces that transparently connect skilled professionals with organizations.
  • Efficient Resource Management: Tools that streamline task management and compensation in decentralized settings.

These consolidated categories reflect the community's commitment to advancing collaboration technology, addressing real-world challenges, and leveraging the power of decentralization.
